Name of the medicines: Generic and Commercial
Most prescription drugs that are marketed receive commercial names (also known as property names, brand names or specialty names) to distinguish them as produced and marketed exclusively by a particular manufacturer. In the United States, these names are usually registered as trademarks before the Patent Office, which gives certain legal rights to registrants with respect to the use of the name. A trade name can be registered for a product that contains a single active ingredient, with or without additives, or for one that contains two or more active ingredients.
A drug marketed by several companies may have several trade names. A drug produced in one country and marketed in many countries may have different trade names in each country.
Throughout this book, generic names (not property) have been used whenever possible. However, since trade names are commonly used and can be more easily recognized, the generic drugs mentioned in this book are listed below in alphabetical order along with many of their trade names. It is followed by another table, a list of trade names in alphabetical order along with their generic name.
With few exceptions, trade names in such tables are limited to those marketed in the United States. These tables are by no means exhaustive, and no effort has been made to list all the trade names currently in use for each drug. The inclusion of a medication in these tables does not indicate approval of the use of a medication, nor does it imply that a medication is effective or safe. Many drugs are marketed almost exclusively under their generic name. The inclusion of a trade name of a drug of this type in these tables does not indicate an endorsement or a preference for the registered trademark version over the generic version.
It can be difficult to decide whether it is better to use a brand-name drug or a generic version of it. It is recommended to discuss it with the doctor or pharmacist.
